Summer Wellness
As our days heat up and the wind and damp of Spring pass away, we are left with beautiful Summer days to enjoy. Summer is nature’s time to grow and flourish, and it is our time to be active and flourish ourselves. So what can we do the make the most of this summer for ourselves? Chinese Medicine offers us some perspectives on how to live harmoniously in the warm days of Summer.
The element associated with summer is Fire. The heart is the main organ related to the Fire element. Because of this, summer is a time when we feel more social and desire more active company from others. Now is a great time to take advantage of longer days and enjoy the company of friends and family. Pleasant time spent with others tonifies the heart’s energies.
Physically, now is the time to be active. Warm muscles are easier to stretch and use, and environmental warmth also protects joints, whereas cold weather can hurt joints even if we feel warm from exercise. Remember to stretch before, during, and after exercise to protect your joints and prevent undue muscle soreness. Has it been a while since you were active regularly? Two tips for starting up again are:
It is important to balance the Fire element of summer with cooling activities and foods. While this season fills us with energy, we should balance the heat with cooling elements. This is a basic principle of Yin and Yang. Socially, balance time spent socializing or working with private time alone. Physically, balance heavy exercise with breathing and stretching exercises like Yoga or Pilates. Balance hot foods like barbeque with fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and cooling herbal teas. You’ll be amazed at how good you feel by combining these elements of activity and rest.
